How would you define a techie?

A techie is a person who has a passion to learn about technology and innovation.

Tell us about yourself (short bio).

Georgie-Ann Getton-Mckoy is a young woman who wears many hats! In her personal life she has a family and is a senior at CUNY Baruch College. In her professional life she is a serial entrepreneur, community builder, speaker, author and a Diversity in Tech Enthusiast. She is the CEO and Founder of Illicit Mind Inc. She enjoys learning as well as teaching new and creative ways to find solutions to problems.

How has tech improved your life?

Tech has improved my life by allowing me to learn more, faster and efficiently. Being a techie has opened so many doors in my personal and professional life.

How can technology be used to improve the Caribbean?

We can use technology to improve the Caribbean by allowing for more connected islands through WIFI for all. We can also bring more jobs to the Caribbean by teaching kids to code and to be familiar with technology.

Tell us about your vision for CITE?

My vision for CITE is to connect Caribbeans that are in Technology and Entrepreneurship worldwide in order to then bring more technology to the Caribbean in the form of jobs, schools and other economic advancements.

Tell us about any project(s) you are working on?

I am currently working on bring more innovation education (tech and entrepreneurship) to youth in the Bronx.

What advice would you give to tech entrepreneurs?

For tech entrepreneurs I would say “Never be afraid to try something new”.

What is your favorite emoji and why?

My favorite emoji has to be the smiley face that shows all the teeth. That’s because I smile just like that.

What do you say to a newbie techie who caused his company’s core business application to go down for a few hours?

I would tell the newbie that it’s okay and now he has learned what buttons to never click or what applications to never go into again. Accidents and mess ups are always lessons on how to do something better.

What productivity tools do you use?

I keep it simple. I use Google drive and a few chrome plugins such as streak.

What technology websites do you follow?

I follow tech crunch and tech insider mostly.

The best advice you have received?

Best advice I have received? Well its been many but I would say “Never give up”. I have been stuck a lot of times with projects, idea, etc but not giving up and learning and pivoting has really shaped me.

Your thoughts on CARICOM’s proposed single ICT space?

The more people you have working in/on something the better it is.

What sports teams do you support?

My husband loves Real Madrid.

During a full 24-hour day, how many times would the hands of a clock overlap?

Uh… 24 I think

What tech event would you like to attend?

I have never been to SXSW. I would love to go to that.

How would you invest a million dollars?

I would use half to start an ed tech accelerator program and have a financial adviser help with the other half in the stock market.

What area of tech is the most challenging and why?

Tech education because the people who have access to become tech producers is limited. Around the world we are all consumers but with a lack of education we don’t have enough producers
