Ask A Techie 20 Questions – Keshav Bahadoor – Software Developer

How would you define a techie?

That is a hard question. Someone who is into technology, and cool stuff. Star Wars is a defining factor.

Tell us about yourself (short bio).

I developed an interest in computer programming during high school. Somehow I ended up pursuing and completing a BSc and MSc in Computer Science. I am currently a full time developer with interests in game and mobile app development, video gaming, and guitar playing.

How has tech improved your life?

I’m horrible at directions so I just Waze myself to your location 🙂

How can technology be used to improve Trinidad?

I would love to see more convenient facilities in Trinidad similar to those of the US, UK and Europe. Better transport systems, smarter recycling facilities, self checkout grocery stores, the list could go on…

How did you get started in IT?

I started playing around with Dark-BASIC game programming in Form 2. By Form 3 I had a weird FPS kind of game with a lot of glitches. I wonder if that platform is still around? (runs of to google…)

What is the meaning of your first name, Keshav?

I believe it’s a name for the Hindu God Lord Krishna.

What is the role of the Software Developer?

To develop software 😀

What is a difficult job interview question and how would you answer it?

I think when interviewers ask you generic questions like “What is your biggest strength” or “What is your biggest weakness”, it turns out to be the most difficult questions. These questions have little to do with the job at hand, and I can’t really give a solid answer as my strength and weaknesses keeps changing a lot with respect to my field – usually I explain this. I then tend to lose respect for the interviewer. Ask me about a project I did. Ask me how did I deal with a particular difficulty during that project.

Tell us about any project(s) you are working on?

I can’t talk about what I’m working on at my job, but I can say it’s exciting and motivating. On the side, I’m always poking around in game development. Now that I have completed my MSc I should have more time for this. (Hint … new Doubles Tycoon game coming soon!)

What developer tools do you use?

A lot depending on projects. Currently Visual Studio 2015 is getting some good mileage.

What technical websites do you follow?

Can’t really recall a particular one right now … usually whatever I come across, I would follow for a while until boredom.

The best advice you have received?

Talk is cheap. Show me the code.

What should the O in Android O stand for?

Optimus Prime

What sports teams do you support?

Not really into much sports.

Why did the computer act crazy?

Most likely it’s running Windows 8. Muahaha.

What tech event would you like to attend?

Google IO, GDC (Game Developers Conference)

How would you invest a million dollars?

I would start my own company and focus on building the software I like, rather than working at a company.

Will an Uber-like service work in Trinidad? (Explain)

After using Uber to get around Europe and UK, I give this some thought from time to time. Uber is so easy to use abroad. You just input where you want to go and a car with a very friendly driver pulls up in-front of you. It can be of great use here, especially since our public transport is poor when compared to other countries.

Think of people going to parties. Instead of driving home, they can just Uber their way home, without worry about parking, or DUIs.

Some drawbacks might be how crime might affect its usage.

What are you doing to shake things up?

Gonna try waking up earlier.

What question would you ask the next techie?

What’s your favourite design pattern?
