How would you define a techie?
I do not like that term very much, but I would say, someone who is enthusiastic about technology, not necessarily computing alone.
Tell us about yourself (short bio).
My name is Ravi Ragoonanan and I am a Canadian born, ICT Professional based in Trinidad. I received my BSc Computing and MSc Information Systems Management from University of Greenwich via SBCS, and have worked in various types of organizations such as finance, technology, manufacturing and energy for about 15 years. One of my proudest achievements is a distinction in my Master’s thesis which was “Design and Development of a hybrid Information Systems maturity model”, I personally believe ICT is a utility like electricity and gives benefits to all aspects of life, without people even knowing IT is involved. I am happily married and have a beautiful daughter who already seems to be a “techie”.
How has tech improved your life?
Well, considering I have been working in tech for 15 years I can say it has improved my life, but I am unable to say how as I was fortunate enough to have use of a computer since the early 90s. Technology is a part of my identity, from playing on my mother’s 486dx2 (most of your readers may not even know what that is), and gaming for hours on my Nintendo (I remember my “ah ha” moment when I realised the 2nd player controller could have controlled the duck in duck hunt). Technology and computing has helped me build a lifestyle that is completely geared around technology, sometimes I take it for granted.
How can technology be used to improve Trinidad?
Trinidad needs to break away from the energy sector dependency as most may know and appreciate. I think Trinidad needs to take a more holistic approach for technology to have a right impact and be viable for growth of the industry and in turn help other industries. Trinidad is one of the few countries in the Caribbean that has 5 submarine cable links, connecting us to the world, but yet still we feel disconnected.
How did you get started in IT?
No idea, happened so long ago, I remember my first paying private job though … was to run a small peer to peer network for a South American company who was helping to build the new airport. I remember being a teenager and talking to the owner and telling him “sure I can do that for less than half of the other persons”, easiest and most money I ever made at that time … and that started me.
