Ask A Techie 20 Questions – Stephan James – Co-founder and CEO

How would you define a techie?

I think generally a techie is someone who is fascinated by developments in the tech space. Technological developments are happening in all aspects of life like travel, medicine and finance.

How has tech improved your life?

One aspect that I would say that tech has definitely improved my life is in terms of opening up communications, making people more accessible today than they have ever been.

How can technology be used to improve Trinidad?

Technology can be used to improve Trinidad and Tobago in many ways. One way is in boosting the tourism sector. Tourism can open up visitors to the many things that our isles have to offer by making it convenient to pay for these experiences and activities online.

How did you get started in IT?

I decided to get into IT because I wanted to build things that might one day make a difference. My foray into IT began when I decided to get into software development at university. Everything that I do now has its roots in that moment.

What would you say to trini businesses to get them to invest in a website, social media and tech?

I believe it’s really about showing value, whether its building a website, doing social media marketing or building an app, as long as it provides value to your user it sells itself.

What is the oldest tech you own?

Lol. I think I still have a cassette walkman lying around somewhere there.

What projects are you working on that you want us to know about?

I’m currently launching a new travel app, Wanderscape –, that helps you discover, share and book unique experiences by locals. We’ll be launching in Trinidad and Tobago and up the islands soon.

Tell us anything about yourself.

I’m an easy-going techie with a creative side. I love building on ideas, travelling the world and having fun.

Most prized gadget you own?

At present that would have to be my MacBook Pro

What tech would you like to own?

A Tesla Model S lol *fingers crossed*

Describe the internet to someone who has never used it before?

A public network where you can find anything.

The best advice you have received?

“Don’t sweat the small stuff”

Which person in tech would you like to meet?

Elon Musk hands down

What sports teams do you support?

Golden State Warriors (basketball), Manchester United (football).

What do you call a computer hero?

A screen saver? Lol… that’s corny tho…

What tech event would you like to attend?

I’d love to pitch my startup at TechCrunch Disrupt. That would be epic!

How would you invest a million dollars?

In building my startup, Wanderscape, ensuring that part proceeds go to aiding causes throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

What future technology interests you?

AI, Virtual Reality and IoT are all very interesting. I think it will be mind-blowing to see how these develop over time as they can truly revolutionise how we communicate and connect with the things around us.

What is your favourite kind of cookie?

Chocolate Chip 🙂
