Jamaican racer and techie. You can connect with him on twitter : twitter.com/utenjm
How would you define a techie?
Anyone who can set the time on a microwave
How would you dress for a tech presentation?
This really varies. Dress to impress but make sure it’s comfortable, that’s very important when everyone is staring at you.
At home and internet goes down, what would you do to pass time?
Read a book
What tech company would you like to work for?
Right now I’m really loving a design company called Ideo. ideo.com and their social good arm ideo.org
Describe a social problem that technology can solve?
Food security, improve food and you improve health, education and the benefits keep on rippling.
Describe the state of ICT in Jamaica.
It’s amazing how things grow in the wild. Jamaica has all the right conditions for growth, lots of commercial effort. What everyone is waiting to see though is if that fungus growing is a poisonous mushroom or really a wild truffle.
Tell us anything about yourself.
I can lick my elbow.
You start a YouTube channel, what do you call it?
Slicks, it’s a type of racing tyre. It would cover my passion for motorsports and tech. I’m always surprised how the two demographics intersect.
Your thoughts on self driving vehicles?
I’m more excited about the tech than this specific application of it. It’s great though, people drive like crap and there are many benefits to self driving cars.
Best movie you’ve seen and why?
This is tough. I’m not a big movie person but my friends are, so I end up watching many. I’m going to be cliché and say the Matrix. Not because of the cinematography but because of how it has inspired me in life.
Advice you would give to other techies?
Live more, get out and do something. No great story ever started with ‘yo one night I was on my computer’
Most prized gadget you own?
My watch, a Tissot PRS200. It never needs to be rebooted.
The day before yesterday, Jane was 7 years old. Next year, she’ll turn 10. How is this possible?
Yesterday was her birthday, so she’s 8. Today is new year’s day so she will be 9 this year, 10 next. She was born on Dec 31
What question would you ask Tim Cook?
What do you think you missed out on all these years?
Twitter or Facebook and why?
Twitter, it’s currently way more organic than Facebook. I have basically no control of my FB news feed anymore.
What do you wish there was an app for?
Dating. Seriously. You can tell a lot about a person based on their phone usage. Why not use the data to find them a proper match?
What city in the world would you locate your tech startup?
Another tough question. Tie between London and Dubai (Hong Kong almost made the list but net neutrality issues).
Thoughts on Net Neutrality?
Essential to life, yes life. The world will be a very very bad place without net neutrality. Call your local politician today and talk to them about it. They might not know what it is but they need to.
Best advice that you received from a manager?
Don’t doubt yourself.
What question would you ask the next techie?
How can you use tech to improve the life of others?
